U.C. Davis Ivermectin Sensitivity Research

The International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS), Silken Windhound owners and breeders are proud and excited that many owners volunteered their dogs to be included in the University of California-Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory study in Ivermectin sensitivity prevalence in dog breeds.

A related independent study by Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine discovered the mutated mdr1 gene responsible for sensitivity to drugs such as Ivermectin in several breeds. WSU-CVM has developed a simple cheek swab test that can be administered by individual owners to check the status of their dogs. To obtain a test kit, go to
http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/depts-VCPL/test.asp

Use of tests, results gained from the UC-Davis study, intimate knowledge of the Silken breeding population, and the dedication of breeders to produce the healthiest Silkens possible will enable us to clear the breed of the affected gene.

Thank you UC-Davis VC and WSU-CVM for your dedication and research in assisting us to improve the health of our breed.

You may view the full UC Davis article on ivermectin sensitivity as it will be published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States) at http://www.pnas.org/cgi/reprint/0402374101v1. Slovenia recognizes the Silken Windhound

The International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS) proudly announces the acceptance of Silken Windhounds into the Slovenian Kennel Club, a member of Europe's Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI).

Thanks to the unceasing efforts of Helena Arh (Wolkowo Kennel, Kranj, Slovenia), and Susann Stjernborg (Kennel Starcastle Hounds, Stockholm, Sweden), the Silken Windhound was listed in the Slovenian Kennel Club's Side Registry (SSR). The SSR is equivalent to the American Kennel Club's (AKC) Foundation Stock Service (FSS).

Helena Arh, president of the Slovenian Sighthound Club, was excited by the news. "We are very proud and happy about this for all of us. The official letter from the Slovenian Kennel Club was sent on the 19th of February and I received the original pedigrees from them on March 18th. This is a side registry, or beginning registry, but it gives us a lot of rights and possibilities for the future. It is a very large step for the Silkens and one I'm happy to have had a part of."

When the developer of the breed, Francie Stull (Kennel Kristull - Austin, Texas), heard the announcement, she stated, "I am thrilled that our beautiful Silkens have received recognition in Slovenia. Our organization is working diligently toward AKC and additional FCI club recognition. We are continually moving closer to those goals. Thank you Helena and Slovenian Kennel Club for this first step."

Please join ISWS in our delight at this announcement by learning more about our Silken Windhounds at http://www.silkenwindhounds.org/.

SILKENFEST 2004

Silkenfest 2004 returned to Kristull Ranch in Austin, TX. The judge was Sandra Moore of Avalon Borzoi (judge comments in italics).

RESULTS

Puppy Dog 9 to 12 months

  1. Windspirit Banderas by Cool Run (Banderas)
Lovely chinchilla and white puppy who moved extremely well with a nice springy trot - a little long in body.

Novice Dog

  1. Cool Run Enchanted Barak (Barak)
Novice dog was exquisite in type; he had a beautiful profile standing and a lovely head, well angulated rear with well let down hocks. Unfortunately, he would not trot around the ring at any time without struggling against the leash, so I could not assess movement.

Bred-By Exhibitor Dog

  1. Gryffyn's Just Push Play (Tyler)
First place white/gold was a nice mover with good reach, although he did break at the pasterns a bit. Stacked, this dog had the sighthound look with a lovely underline and topline, although I did not care for his nose pigment, he had the best head in this class.
  2. Kristull Umber (Umber)
Second place moved better and had no break in the pasterns, but his topline and underline were not as sighthoundy as first place.
  3. Cool Run Enchanted Snowdust (Dustin)
Third place was a lovely dog in type who would not cooperate and move out on this date.

Open Dogs

  1. Kristull Zerendipity (Ren)
First place moved moderately well but did break at the pasterns, however, stacked he was the most sighthoundy in profile in this class. He really had the most correct topline for my interpretation of the standard. Good tail carraige.
  2. Windspirit Austen (Austen)
Second place was a superb mover. A little long bodied, but had a nice topline for his length of body. Good tail carraige.
  3. Cool Run Enchanted Myles (Nobble)
  4. Kristull Absolutely Cool Run (Absolute)
Third and fourth place were vry similar dogs in type. They had better topline and underline than second place, but they did not move out as well. Three other dogs in this class (Kristull Yashi, Kristull Ivanhoe and Kristull Quickening) were the best movers who had more prosternum and reach in front than any of the male exhibits, but, when stacked they lacked a look that immediately said "sighthound".

Puppy Bitch 3 to 6 months

  1. Gryffyn's Moonage Daydream (Luna)
  2. Gryffyn's Hazy Shade of Winter (Winni)
Very similar puppies but hard to assess movement. Both bitches have great length and return of upper arm, but first place was more correct (shorter) in length.

Puppy Bitch 6 to 9 months

  1. Windspirit Bellissima Kohana (Belle)
First place moved very well - did not break at pasterns very much, but tended toward a long body and needed more underline.
  2. Cool Run Heaven Can Wait (Kami)
I liked her profile, topline and underline better but she was uncooperative and would not move out.

Puppy Bitch 9 to 12 months

  1. Kristull Carley Kohana (Carley)
I loved this bitch, she moved beautifully, broke very little at the pasterns and had a very sighthoundy profile. She, like several others, could use more prosternum.
  2. Allagante Shaningo Windspirit (Shani)
  3. Allagante Aisuru Raetia (Shia)
Second and third had lovely breed type and toplines, very sighthoundy and elegant. Second place moved out better with less pastern breaking than third place. Both girls needed more prosternum. I loved the look of all three in this class.

Bred-By Exhibitor Bitch

  1. Cool Run Enchanted Mia (Mia)
First place had absolutely exquisite breed type - moved well, very little break in pasterns. She was beautiful stacked and had a lovely head and expression.
  2. Gryffyn's Dancin' Queen (Ginger)
  3. Kristull Nocturn (Nocturn)

Open Bitch

  1. Kristull Riata (Riata)
Best mover with no breaking pasterns, on the smaller side which made her "go round" even more impressive. Stacked she had a very sighthoundy look and expression, lovely head and nice body and ribbing, excellent prosternum for her size.
  2. Cool Run Enchanted Morgana (Morgana)
A bit more tall and elegant, moved well and had nice prosternum, more than 3rd or 4th place.
  3. Kristull Z-Mystery (Mystery)
Third place bitch moved well and was very similar to 1st place, but did not have as much prosternum as 1st.
  4. Kristull Jumpin' Jehosephat (Josi)
Really a nice mover, lovely front, but had less topline than the first three.

Winners Dog: Gryffyn's Just Push Play
Although he did not have the uninterrupted reach of the BOB dog or WB, he was very game and covered a lot of ground at a trot. He also had a bit better topline than WB.

Reserve Winners Dog: Kristull Zerendipity

Winners Bitch: Kristull Riata
Loved her movement and her type - she faded a little. Probably bored in this class but moved every bit as sound as BOB.

Reserve Winners Bitch: Cool Run Enchanted Mia

Best of Winners: Gryffyn's Just Push Play

Best Puppy: Kristull Carley Kohana

Best Opposite Sex Puppy: Windspirit Banderas

Best in Specialty: Kristull Dante By Cool Run
Beautiful brindle dog, no pastern breaking, well angulated rear, well let down hocks. Under all that coat he had beautiful sighthound underline and topline, just perfect neck and shoulder assembly.

Best of Opposite Sex in Specialty: Kristull Riata
