About the Registry

If you have any questions, please email iswsregistrar@silkenwindhounds.org for assistance

The Registry is the basis of any dog breed.  Without a well documented tracking of our dogs, they are not really a breed. The ISWS Registry shines as a wonderful example of how a history of the breed should be kept.

The purpose of the ISWS Registry is to preserve the integrity of the Silken Windhound breeding records. It also establishes a canine DNA database with parentage verification profiles, showing individual genetic identity. In addition, it is used to document the results in the ISWS Health Registry.

Breeders must DNA test every dog to verify its parentage prior to breeding.  If the parentage has not been DNA verified, then the offspring of that dog will not be eligible for registration until the dog is DNA tested.

Sadly, all unregistered offspring will not only be lost to the breed, but the ISWS will also not consider them purebred Silkens.

Since it’s establishment in 1999, all recognized Silken Windhounds have been registered worldwide by the original Silken Windhound registry, owned and operated by the International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS).

Many Silken Windhounds are also dual registered with the United Kennel Club (UKC), the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA), and in Europe to date, the Slovenian Kennel Club, and the Swiss Kennel Club.

Organizations outside of those listed here are not regarded by the breed club as legitimate registries for the breed.

Registration Steps

Please note: all forms are submitted to iswsregistrar@silkenwindhounds.org & all payments are made to iswstreasurer@yahoo.com

Costs for all of these services are listed on the Fee Schedule

Proof of payment must be provided for each transaction.  Proof of payment = A screen shot of the PayPal payment receipt.  This is the only way the Registrar can easily verify the amount you have paid.

  1. DNA test the Sire and Dam through VGL at UC Davis.  This step should be completed before the breeding occurs.  Verification of parentage must be completed through this lab before a litter can be registered.  Written instructions and DNA kit requests are found here.
  2. If the dam is leased at the time of mating or birth of a litter, you must submit a Lease Notification form.
  3. Register the litter by filling out either the Litter Registration

      • Applicant’s Name, Address and E-mail Address
    • Please allow two to three weeks from the date that the Registrar receives litter applications to receive individual dog registration applications. Incomplete, unsigned, or illegible applications may be returned to sender.
    • Note: All owners of a bitch must sign the Litter Registration form; only one stud owner is required for signature of the Litter Registration. Electronic Signatures are acceptable or have the stud owner or co-owners/lessees email iswsregistrar@silkenwindhounds.org
  4. If you have not used the Full Litter Registration option, you will receive Individual Registration Applications.

UKC Registration

SummersSpiritInphenite 00Seven

In March of 2011 Silken Windhounds were accepted into the United Kennel Club (UKC) one of the oldest all-breed registries in the US. In May of 2011 the current records in the ISWS registry were sent to UKC for inclusion in their registry. After this date, it is the responsibility of Silken owners to register their litters and individuals with UKC per the UKC rules.

When registering a litter with UKC it is required that you provide proof of DNA testing of the litter’s parents by ISWS’s approved lab (VGL). This is the same requirement as the ISWS.  If the parents’ DNA has already been submitted to UKC, there is no need to do so again.

For more information on registration procedures with the United Kennel Club, please visit their website.

ISWS will continue to register dogs for inclusion in its registry, so dogs would be double-registered. Dogs must be registered with ISWS in order to compete in ISWS-sanctioned shows and receive ISWS championship points. Also, as we move toward AKC acceptance the ISWS database will be what is transferred to them, not the UKC records.
